PREGNANCY & POSTPARTUM

The journey of Motherhood is a unique time in a woman's life: fluctuating hormones, a reduction in sleep, additional/changing family roles, and new demands as parents and partners.  Oftentimes, the reality is quite different than what we expected.  The physical changes along with the altered environment create the prime environment for potential anxiety, depression, and other new or uncomfortable thoughts and feelings.  Please know this- these are REAL and VALID.

 Mom Truths:

  • Bonding with your baby may not be a magical movie moment and can actually take time.

  • Parenting requires skills that are learned and practiced- mothering is not necessarily instinctive.

  • Feeding your baby is hard. Bottles, nipples, formula, milk, food...there are going to be struggles with whatever they eat, at any age.

  • Missing aspects of your pre-mom life is real.  Who doesn't want freedom, time, independence, and uninterrupted sleep?!

YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

According to recent studies, as many as 1 in 5 moms and 1 in 10 dads experience symptoms of Perinatal Mental Health Disorders. Symptoms can appear at any time during pregnancy and the first 12 months after childbirth.  Left untreated, these symptoms can continue well past the first year.  Although the term postpartum depression is most often used, there are actually several forms of disorders that also include:

  • Depression during pregnancy and postpartum

  • Anxiety during pregnancy and postpartum

  • Pregnancy or postpartum OCD

  • Postpartum Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

  • Bipolar Mood Disorders

  • Postpartum Psychosis

These are highly treatable and with the right specialist, you can enjoy being a mom.
